Thierry Magon de La Villehuchet, 65
Founder, Access International Advisors
Date of Death: Dec. 23

Workers discovered the body of Mr. de La Villehuchet in his firm’s New York office. Mr. de La Villehuchet’s firm oversaw a fund with assets invested by Bernard L. Madoff, according to a person familiar with the situation. An attorney for the firm told detectives that Mr. de La Villehuchet’s firm had lost $1.5 billion in the Madoff scandal.

Alex Widmer, 52
Chief Executive, Bank Julius Baer
Date of Death: Dec. 3

Overseeing the private bank, Mr. Widmer turned the Zurich firm into a leading bank for wealthy clients. Julius Baer officials said Mr. Widmer’s death wasn’t linked to problems at the bank.

Chief Operating Officer, Olivant Ltd.
Date of Death: Sept. 25

In late September, Mr. Stephenson drove to a rail station about 30 miles from his London home and stepped onto the tracks as an express train approached. Mr. Stephenson co-founded the investment firm in 2006. Olivant began accumulating a 2.8% stake in UBS and leading a revolt to turn around the Swiss banking giant. The UBS shares were put in a Lehman Brothers Holdings account with a proviso that allowed Lehman to use the assets as collateral. With Lehman in bankruptcy Olivant may never recover the assets.

*************************************

Adolf Merckle, 74
Date of Death: Jan. 5

Adolf Merckle, one of Germany’s wealthiest men, committed suicide after his family business empire began unraveling amid mounting debt, his family said Tuesday. Mr. Merckle’s body was discovered Monday night near train tracks outside the southern German city of Ulm in what local police described Tuesday as a “railway accident.” There are no signs that anyone else was to blame, they added in a statement.

Chief Executive, Sheldon Good & Co.
Date of Death: Jan. 6

Real-estate executive Steven L. Good was found dead of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound Monday in his Jaguar in a forest preserve outside Chicago, said the Kane County Sheriff’s Department.  A maintenance worker discovered the body of Steven L. Good, 52, of Highland Park, Monday morning behind the wheel of his Jaguar parked in a lot at the Max McGraw Wildlife Preserve in East Dundee.

President, Bank Medici
Current Status: In hiding.

With an aggressive style that stood out in the staid world of Austrian banking even more than her bouffant red wig, Sonja Kohn made few friends gathering billions for Bernard L. Madoff from wealthy investors in Russia and across Europe.  Now she has even fewer. Mrs. Kohn has dropped out of sight, leaving the firm she founded, Bank Medici, in the hands of Austrian regulators, who took it over last week. A theory widely repeated by those who know Mrs. Kohn is that she may be afraid of some particularly displeased investors: Russian oligarchs whose money made up a chunk of the $2.1 billion that Bank Medici invested with Mr. Madoff.

“With Russian oligarchs as clients,” said a Viennese banker who knew Mrs. Kohn and her husband socially, “she might have reason to be afraid.”

As of this writing, it’s about one week until the release of the 7th and Final (?) book of the Harry Potter Series. Here are my decidedly unscientific and un-researched predictions for Book 7:

1. One of the inner-four (Harry, Hermione, Ron, Ginny) will die. I predict Ginny, because Harry just seems to be a tragic hero, and tragic heroes don’t generally get the girl.

2. Several minor Hogwarts characters will die. I think Neville will die, but not before doing something heroic. We might also see some of the Weasly clan die.

3. Percy might flirt with the dark side, with the best of intentions, though.

If you just read that last paragraph, and have no idea what I’m talking about, you probably haven’t read the book (or just weren’t paying attention). Don’t worry, you’ll enjoy the movie just fine.

For most of the movie, the enemy is Dolores Umbridge, member of the Ministry of Magic, who gets herself appointed DADA teacher, then High Inquisitor, then Headmaster, replacing Dumbledore. She terrorizes the school while firmly entrenching the Ministry in control of the school, until she meets her comeuppance thanks to an increasingly rebellious Hermione. The Usual Suspects join with students from the three other Houses (sans Slytherin) to form Dumbledore’s Army, and a good chunk of movie time is dedicated to watching them train and grow, both in ability and confidence.

The final battle at the Department of Mysteries is different than anything seen before, but it seems to fizzle out before too long, leaving its initial promise buried in what seems to be excessive editing. The same could be said of the confrontation between Big D and Big V. I thought much more could be made about it, but it just seems to pop into the screen without the fanfare that I believe this encounter deserved (like the chapter in the book that contains this encounter, titled ominously “The Only One He Ever Feared”).

Newcomer Evanna Lynch nearly steals the film in a small role. Her portrayal of Luna Lovegood as a seemingly-not-all-there student is spot-on. Also growing into his role is Neville Longbottom, and movie goers finally find out what happened to his parents that caused him to be raised by his grandmother.

Overall, the movie is enjoyable, though the ending lacks a certain oomph and finality to it (it seems like simply a chapter in a longer story, which, it is). If you’ve never read the books, though, be sure to take along someone who has, and enjoy it together.

For those of you wanting more detail, here it is. The restaurant location is nice, in Addison Circle, though it gives off the vibe of pretending to be more than it is. The restaurant itself is located in a corner of a rotunda surrounding blue structure that perfectly showcases modern art.

Inside, the mood is very romantic, with the lighting turned down very low, and live music being performed most of the evening. Overall, the atmosphere was very inviting. Too bad the same can’t be said about the service..

The service was slow. VERY slow. Our waiter seemed confused when we asked to break up the check, and told us it would take some time. “Some time” turned out to be exactly 33 minutes. This still compared favorably to the time it took to bring out our food, though, as that clocked closer to 40 minutes.

The price for dinner was nothing to sneeze at either, as the least expensive entree on the menu came in at $13, and the most expensive at $31. It would stand to reason that for restaurants that label themselves as “Restaurants of Distinction,” at least the food would be better, tastier, fresher, or would have something that would set it apart from a run-of-the-mill undistinguished restaurant. Unfortunately, that is not the case. The food was bland, the portions were small, and almost uniformly lacking in sides. It was simply not good value for the money.

Finally, while the table where our party was seated had a nice tablecloth, the truth underneath was a little revealing and unexpected: it turned out that, in nice Avanti, Restaurant of Distinction, our table was a plain, portable, plastic folding table. This portable folding table, to be exact. Just not the kind of thing that we would expect to find in a restaurant rated 5 stars from Zagat.

However, when viewing the larger picture, it seemed to fit right in: What we paid for, and expected to get, was not quite what we found under the surface.

Recommendation to avoid.
