According to the NYTimes, he was taken straight to jail:

Mr. Madoff was expected to return to his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Lower Manhattan while federal prison officials determine where he will serve his sentence. The judge indicated that Mr. Madoff would be imprisoned somewhere in the Northeast.

However, I guess there's always the possibility of appeal, but I'm not sure how that would work since he himself pled guilty.

I just want to know --- did he go directly to jail?? Or, will he float around for a few years while he appeals his conviction? I hoped they cuffed him and took him directly to a cell.

I agree. Clawbacks for all.

Judge Chin seemed to feel the same way:

"I simply do not get the sentence that Mr. Madoff has done all that he could or told all that he knows," Chin said. As it became clear that Madoff's scheme was unraveling, Chin cited the jewelry Madoff mailed to family members and other disbursements made to those close to him.

While Madoff tried to pay back investors, Chin says the presentencing memo shows that Madoff withdrew millions of dollars for the personal expenses of family and friends, such as "the acquisition of two yachts and four country club memberships."

His wife and kids should give up every luxury that they possess. Why should his wife and kids fare any better than the unwitting victims? There are legal principles, like "constructive trust", that would support the notion that the wife/kids should be regarded as holding their possessions in trust for the victims -- and thus, be required to turn over those assets -- without it being deemed a "taking" by the government...
