Earlier this week, Bud Kennedy of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram wrote an article that got plenty of attention: For the first time, Hispanic children are the majority in Texas’ first-grade classrooms.

While it may be true that it’s the first time that fact holds for all of Texas, in the Dallas Independent School District, that has been true for many years.  As a matter of fact, in 2007 first grade classrooms in DISD were 68% Hispanic. If we were going for a simple majority for Hispanic first graders, it would actually be a DECREASE for DISD.  So that’s old news In DISD.

The real question? Well, where are the white kids? Follow me after the jump for two unbelievable graphs.

First, we have the breakdown of population by ethnicity for Dallas, according to the 2005-2007 Census survey.  See the red triangle? That’s 30.3% of the Dallas population that’s classified by the Census as “white”

So, if you were going to have a similar breakdown by ethnicity for DISD, you would expect the numbers to be close, if not the same.  Well, have a look at the chart for DISD:

See that red sliver there (can’t even call it a triangle anymore)? That’s the population of white children in DISD, which begs the question, “Where the white kids at?”

  2. While the pie chart does include “mixed race” often half Hispanic/half white & half black/half white persons are counted as Hispanic or black because these phenotype(s) or physical appearance is dominant over the recessive Caucasian phenotype. Perfect example is our beloved President Obama- touted as the first black president when in fact his heritage is black AND white. This won’t explain all of the huge disparity but the bigger issue is to look past race and address students as individuals, not ‘pigeon hole’ them as a member of a particular “group”. In other words- Why dichotomize ?

  3. There seems to be a large urban population of young white childless people who live in the downtown condos. I wonder if there is an equally large population of empty nesters.
Many of the white grade school kids are now home schooled and in “coop” schools. They all left when the district quit caring about them and focused every fiber of their time and money on raising the poorest students’ test scores. They left when there was nothing offered to the regular, average, above average besides rote test taking “skills”. They left when they no longer mattered.

  4. My question then becomes, shouldn’t the DISD Board of Trustees reflect those numbers?
