How bad have Dallas/Fort worth home sales been?

This chart includes all of North Texas (so, Dallas, Fort Worth, and surrounding counties).  And this is one of the STRONGEST economic areas still left in the country. I shudder to think what other metropolitan areas look like.

The source of this data is a February Dallas Morning News article.  I tried to find a link to the hilarious “DFW Housing Facts” website, but it’s now been stripped of all content. However, you can still view a Google chache link here.  My favorite fact?

  1. Stable Home Prices
  2. Home prices in the Dallas/Fort Worth area have maintained slow, steady growth so values should continue to increase.

Here is the truth about Dallas/Fort Worth sales:

Pre-owned home sales in DFW plunge 27% in January.

In news that comes as no surprise to anyone being halfway honest with themselves, sales of pre-owned homes in North Texas dropped 27% in January 2009, the 4th straight month of double digit decline. Except for a small 2% increase in September 2008, every one of the last 13 months has seen pre-owned home sales drop in DFW.

Perhaps if some people didn’t price 90 year old homes for a quarter million dollars, these numbers wouldn’t look so bad.
