revised holiday schedule
Posted by | Posted in Society | Posted on 29-11-2006
I’m proposing a new holiday schedule. There are too many holidays at the end of the year and too few at the beginning. Also, there are a bunch of holidays that just fall on the wrong day of the week. Much of the motivation behind my proposition involves the work schedules of the typical office worker.
As far as holiday compression, think about the following. We have Thanksgiving, followed by Christmas, then New Year’s Day. That’s a lot of extra calories and a lot of spending without enough time to recover. And that’s a lot of fatiguing travel all at once.
And as far as days of the week, think about this: who needs Independence Day to fall on a Wednesday?
Let’s try it another way. All those Federal holidays shall now be observed on Fridays. Those holidays that sometimes fall on Saturday/ Sunday (as did Veteran’s Day in 2006) will be re-assigned to a Friday. This lets all the office workers enjoy a 3-day weekend. Thus, there is never any year when an office worker misses out. As a part of this reassignment, the always-falls-on-a-Monday holidays will now become always-falls-on-a-Friday. It’s just more fun to have a Friday off than it is to have a Monday off. And let’s spread them out a bit more. Every other month we’ll get one of these 3-day weekends.
The cluster of holidays at the end of the year will be revised. Merge Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day to create a nice long block. Workers can augment this with a couple of their own personal vacation days and form a full week off. Have a similar week in July, centered around Independence Day. So we get a full week off during July and a full week off during December. That’s a nice distribution.
